Text Box: WHERE DO RESCUES COME FROM?
Most of our rescues come from local shelters where they were either abandoned or found as strays. Others come from families who find they cannot handle the dog or need to give a dog up due to circumstances beyond their control. These dogs are often purchased from pet shops, puppy mills or backyard breeders who breed irresponsibly without care for temperament or health and offer not support to new dog owners once the purchase has been made.
Once a dog comes into our system they are evaluated for no less than 30 days to see what kind of home best suits them and to determine if and where they need to be placed. All dogs are brought up to date on their shots, spay, neutered, heartworm negative, supplied with heartworm preventative and micro-chipped. All adults are checked for kidney and heart and all seniors have a complete senior panel.
ADOPTION PROCESS
You can start the process of becoming an approved home by completing an adoption application at www.btca.com click on rescue, and ask that it be forwarded to Rescue Coordinator in your area. The application will answer any questions we have prior to an interview. A home visit and reference check will follow. Once you are an approved home we can identify what rescue dog best fits the demographics of your home and experience level with this breed.
PATIENCE
Sometimes it takes time to find a dog that best matches your home and experience level. In some cases rescue dogs have not been socialized with other animals and need to be only pets. It is rare that we get rescue dogs that are cat friendly so cat owners may have to wait longer.
Please keep in mind that the Bull Terrier Club of America Rescue Support is made up entirely of generous volunteers. These people tend to the many needs of this organization in their spare time outside the commitments of their personal lives (jobs, families, dogs).
Often our Rescue Coordinators are the very same people who not only review, interview and approve homes, they are also tend to the needs of the rescue dogs themselves, such as veterinary care, fostering and transportation.
Please expect to wait up to 3 days or more for a reply to correspondence or a confirmation of your application. If you do not hear from anyone please follow up. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

FOSTER HOMES
All of the dogs managed by the BTCP and BTCA are located just NW of Philadelphia either in a foster home or in a kennel. We are in desperate need of foster homes in this area. All that we ask of foster homes is that they donate a warm dry spot in their home, two meals a day, 3-4 walks or “let outs” a day and a little play time. A foster dog never need meet or socialize with your own pets. A safe spot in a crate is all they need for now.
Fostering will help us save on the daily cost of kenneling. 75% of the donations towards the dogs in our care go to kenneling. At this time we pay $10.00 per a day for kenneling each dog. More often than not the cost of kenneling more than surpasses the costs of a dogs medical needs. Because of the need for kenneling, our adoption fees cover a mere 25% of what a rescues total cost is to the sponsoring club. Money should never be an object when it comes to saving a life, but we cannot continue to save and recondition dogs when we have no funds.
All medical needs of a foster dog are covered by the club who is sponsoring the dog. We can even sometimes supply a crate and supplies for temporary use.
Every little bit helps from fostering, transportation, home checks, visitation and mentoring, to simply taking a rescue dog for a walk to play and socialize. Please open up your heart and share some time with a Rescue Bull Terrier.
The Bull Terrier Club of Philadelphia rescue fund is in need of monetary donations. These funds are used to provide rescue dogs with much needed medical treatments and in most cases boarding. If you are unable to foster then please consider donating $10.00 per day to cover the kenneling fee for our rescues. We also accept donations of nylabones, kongs, martingale style collars, leashes, crates and blankets.
Please contact Paula Shaw to make a donation or you can send your donation via PayPal to email address PaulaShawBTCARSC@aol.com.
